Hydro GardensImagine being able to grow lettuce, tomatoes, and a whole host of other fruits and vegetables in any type of weather anywhere in the world. This is the breakthrough of hydroponic gardening. Hydroponics gardening is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions – without the need for soil. Thus it is often referred to as soil-less culture or tank farming. Plants grown with their roots soaked in nutrient-rich solution or in an inert medium such as gravel or coconut husk soaked in the same solution. Advantages to HydroponicsSince its discovery during the 19th century, this method has gained numerous enhancements and has been adapted all over the world. Hydroponic gardening offers several advantages over soil gardening. - Growth rate is 30-50 percent faster and the yield is greater - Less prone to bug infestations, funguses and disease - Uses considerably less waters, water stays in the system and can be reused - Fewer pesticides are used since it is no longer a necessity - Maximizes growing space since there is no need for soil, plants can be grown in vertical stacks on top of each other. - Overall cost is significantly lower making it the most practical choice for growing plants. Hydroponic Gardening SystemsThere are two main types of hydroponic systems – active and passive. In an active hydroponic system the roots are directly over the nutrient solution while a pump actively moves the solution. In a passive hydroponic system a growing medium or wick absorbs the nutrient solution that is in turn absorbed by the plant’s roots. Hydroponic systems can also be characterized as recovery or non-recovery. In a recovery system, the nutrient solution is re-used while in a non-recovery system, the nutrient solution is absorbed by the growing medium and is no longer re-used. Hydroponic CultureHydroponics is fast becoming the future of gardening. It is currently taught in schools around the world and horticultural societies. The continued research in the field is government funded at major universities and even NASA. It is also becoming a popular hobby since it’s easy to get involved in plus it’s fun and exciting.
